A pile of garbage...

PETROS GIANNAKOURIS/AP

A woman passes a pile of garbage in central Athens yesterday as trash collectors refused government calls to end their strike. Officials said, however, that many municipal workers have returned to work and are helping clean up the city. Tens of thousands of tons of rotting trash remain stacked on sidewalks as the strike has been running for 10 days. Thessaloniki Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos called on authorities to arrest striking garbage workers who have set up picket lines at the city’s landfill.
