Briton held over khat haul at Athens airport

A 43-year-old British national faced an Athens prosecutor yesterday after airport police seized 14 kilograms of khat from him in one of the largest hauls of the stimulant made by Greek authorities.

The man, who was arrested at Oslo airport just before Christmas on similar charges, is believed to have brought the drug into the country with the aid of another Briton, who is being sought by police.

The drug – a stimulant produced in African countries such as Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, where its use is legal – is believed to have been destined for British customers living in Greece.

Yesterday’s haul is the sixth made since 2005 when khat first appeared in Greece. Some 55 kilos of the drug have been confiscated by customs officials since then.
