A male dolphin, which has been nicknamed ‘Kyriakos’ by locals, and his calf nuzzle a springtime swimmer playfully in the sea yesterday at the seaside resort of Kalamia, near the town of Corinth in the eastern Peloponnese. Fishermen in the area said that the mammal had become familiar to them because it appeared in their waters every Sunday with its calf. As ‘Kyriaki’ is the Greek word for Sunday, the fishermen decided to call the dolphin Kyriakos, a fairly common name among Greek men. Locals did not appear to have thought of a nickname for Kyriakos’s calf yet. Mediterranean common dolphins are typically found in groups of 50–70 animals.
