Bank employees have called a 24-hour strike for today in protest at the government’s decision to make changes to the auxiliary pension fund of state-controlled Emporiki Bank, Greece’s fourth-largest lender. Emporiki Bank shareholders are scheduled to approve the state’s proposal at a general meeting this afternoon. Bank employees were on strike for three weeks in June in protest against broader changes to the banking sector’s pension system which have since been passed in Parliament.

Two people were slightly injured on Sunday when the helicopter in which they were traveling was forced to make an emergency landing on Crete, authorities said. The helicopter’s engine began losing power at the time the aircraft was preparing to land, authorities added. The helicopter had been contracted to help clean electrical pylons.

The husband of a 48-year-old woman, who died from multiple stab wounds in her Kolonos home over the weekend, confessed to killing his wife on Sunday, police in Athens said. The reasons behind the murder were not disclosed. The man has been taken to a prosecutor for questioning.

A team of 30 firefighters, handling 11 fire engines and aided by four water-dropping aircraft, on Sunday night struggled to contain a fire that had broken out in Spitali, Messinia. Fanned by strong winds, the blaze ravaged tracts of agricultural and forest land but posed no threat to residential areas, firemen said. The extent of the damage was yesterday unclear.

An accident involving an army jeep on Saturday killed an elderly pedestrian in Athens, the military said. The jeep hit the pedestrian, who has yet to be identified, while driving down Syngrou Avenue, authorities said. Police were looking into the causes of the accident.
