The 33rd congress...

KATERINA MAVRONA/ANA

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis addresses the 33rd congress of the General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE) in Athens yesterday. The premier asked the unionists for their support in a range of reforms that the ruling conservatives want to carry out. Karamanlis said that one of the key aims of his government's reforms is to reduce unemployment. He said that the employment rate is a 'tangible' way of measuring the success of reforms.

PASOK leader George Papandreou and Synaspismos Left Coalition President Alekos Alavanos also addressed the congress. Papandreou said the government's handling of education protests had 'set back by decades' the relationship between the public and the police.
