Father arrested for sex abuse

A 53-year-old man has been arrested in western Thessaloniki for allegedly raping his teenage daughter for the last six years, authorities said yesterday.

The suspect had reportedly been regularly sexually abusing his 16-year-old daughter since she was aged 9 and threatened to harm her if she told anyone about what he was doing to her.

The girl, however, confided in her two older sisters about the abuse a few days ago and they in turn informed authorities.

Police said the large family had recently returned to Greece after living abroad.

“The suspect was arrested in the early hours of Thursday and is being questioned by Thessaloniki police,” said a senior officer.

Authorities said they have removed the girl from her family’s custody and are offering her psychological support.
