More than 100 students who are staying in a hotel in central Athens that has been rented by Panteion University because other accommodation is not available said yesterday that they are residing in “Third-World conditions.”

The students claimed that there are few fridges and no washing machines at the hotel. They also charged that the building is dirty and cockroach-infested.

“Apart from a lack of basic amenities at the hotel, we are also not sure if the water is safe to drink because it is yellow and the pipes are ancient,” said student Orestis Papayiannopoulos.

The hotel on Acharnon Street houses 110 students who attend one of Greece’s most prestigious universities because the halls of residence can only house about 100 of the 3,000 out-of-town students that attend courses at the institution.
