After an eight-day break, the trial of six people allegedly involved in bombing attacks by Greece’s second-deadliest left-wing terrorist group resumed yesterday, with a suspect accusing a fellow-defendant of treachery.

Four of the suspects were convicted for 25 years each last year for participation in the Revolutionary Popular Struggle (ELA) group, which killed two people in a string of attacks on mainly police and US-linked targets between the mid-1970s and 1995. One, Christos Tsigaridas, 65, was released in January due to poor health.

On the trial’s third day yesterday, after a break to allow newly appointed defense lawyers to become better acquainted with the case, the charges were read. Also, Angeletos Kanas, 53, who is in prison, called Tsigaridas a liar and a stooge.

Referring to Tsigaridas, Kanas spoke of “people who secretly cooperated [with the authorities] and lent credence to the charges by silently accepting fabricated accusations in return for aid to their bankrupt firms.” Tsigaridas, the only of the four who admits ELA membership, did not respond.
