Vodafone is set for hefty fine

Mobile phone operator Vodafone could face total fines of 12 million euros as the watchdog investigating the recent phone-tapping scandal has found the firm guilty of eight offenses, sources told Kathimerini yesterday.

The Communications Privacy Protection Authority (ADAE) has found that Vodafone breached the privacy of communications, did not have effective security measures, impeded the watchdog’s investigation and did not inform its customers or ADAE about the eavesdropping.

Each of the offenses carries a 1.5-million-euro fine.

The watchdog has been examining the affair, which led to the tapping of some 100 phones, including the premier’s, since the government announced the news in February.

Sources said that in its report, which has not been made public yet, ADAE is critical of Vodafone’s CEO in Greece, Giorgos Koronias. The watchdog has concluded he was wrong to disconnect the spy software because important information was lost in the hunt for the eavesdroppers.
