Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis meets with her Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul at Greece’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

School and kindergarten teachers begin a five-day strike. They will hold a rally in front of the Ministry of Education in Athens at 11 a.m.

Tuesday

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis meets with her Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Ali Abul Gheit and Foreign Minister of Iran Manouchehr Mottaki. In the evening, she will attend a reception hosted by US President George W. Bush for participating heads of UN delegations.

Wednesday

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis meets with her Jordanian counterpart Abdelelah al-Kahtib, India’s Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos. She is to host a luncheon for the members of the UN Security Council on the occasion of its Greek presidency.

The general secretary of Amnesty International, Irene Khan, speaks to the public about human rights issues at the French Institute in Athens at 7 p.m.

The City of Athens and the Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity Research hold the second open educational seminar on “Obesity and Nutrition.” Greek scientists and academics will speak at the seminar.

Teaching unions are due to hold a a demonstration in front of Athens University at noon.

Thursday

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis meets with Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, their Albanian counterpart Besnik Mustafaj and Foreign Minister of Algeria Mohammed Bedjaoul.

General Secretary of Amnesty International Irene Khan receives an award from the Athens Bar Association for the organization’s contribution to the protection of human rights and justice at the Old Parliament building on Stadiou Street, Athens, at 7 p.m.

President of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage Costas Karras and the academic committee of ECOCITY hold a press conference and workshop, “The End of the Era of Cheap Oil,” at noon at the offices of the Hellenic Society in Plaka. The function is taking place under the auspices of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The First International Organic Product Fair opens in Thessaloniki. The fair is taking place under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and with the support of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Friday

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis participates in a meeting of foreign ministers of the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) with UN special representative for Kosovo Martti Ahtisaari at the offices of the Greek Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.
