The European Commission referred Greece yesterday to the European Court of Justice for leaving Brussels in the dark over its adoption of overdue measures aimed at tackling money laundering and the funding of terrorist organizations.

The Commission said that Greece has changed its calendar of implementation several times and has failed to adhere to disclosure requirements concerning the procedure being adopted.

“Given the lack of communication of these measures to the Commission by the member state, the final date of adoption of all the implementing measures remains uncertain,” the Commission said.

Greece prepared a draft law in April targeting money laundering but it was met with strong opposition from lawyers as the proposed legislation would require them to break their client-attorney privilege and provide information to authorities.

The Commission also referred France to the European court for lack of communication over the same issue.
