Hefty fine for Sea Diamond

The owners, operator and captain of the Sea Diamond cruise ship that sunk off the island of Santorini were yesterday fined –1.17 million for causing marine pollution.

The 143-meter vessel has leaked tons of fuel into the sea since sinking off the popular holiday island on April 5.

“The general sea area has been polluted, along with large parts of the island’s coast,” the Merchant Marine Ministry said.

The ship’s tanks are believed to have contained some 450 tons of fuel.

Last week, a prosecutor issued arrest warrants for two Louis Group officials and the ship’s captain for failing to provide an action plan for removing the remaining fuel.
