Killer ex-con in shootout

Police have arrested Constantine Karathanassis, 42, in connection with the fatal shooting of Albanian national Nikola Arapi, 24, in Palaio Faliron a week ago during a gunfight in which either Arapi or another man allegedly shot and killed Akritas Savouras, the son of former parliamentary deputy Hippocrates Savouras.

Karathanassis, who was released from prison in February after serving a sentence for the murder of a police officer in 1983, admitted to shooting Arapi, who died in the hospital on Saturday.

He said he had gone with Savouras, who had been staying in his home, to meet Arapi and another Albanian. During an argument between Savouras and the two over a woman, one of them had shot Savouras. Karathanassis said he chased the two men and shot at them, injuring Arapi. He said he then left the scene of the crime and disposed of his gun. Police arrested Karathanassis at his home in Kolonaki last Thursday. He appeared before the investigating magistrate on Saturday.
