Athens's gleaming new trams stand in the terminus at Hellenikon yesterday, waiting for their return to the capital's streets today, almost 44 years after their predecessors were scrapped. The high-tech, air-conditioned vehicles are expected to convey some 80,000 passengers between Syntagma Square and the coastal suburbs of Neo Faliron and Glyfada. The tram will operate around the clock with an adult fare of 60 cents. Tramlines were torn up to make way for cars and the last tram stopped on October 16, 1960. Now trams are trying to take back at least part of the city.
