PASOK seeking transparency

PASOK will publish all its financial income and expenditure on the Internet and publicly name each person that contributes money to the party’s coffers, according to proposals put forward by Socialist leader George Papandreou yesterday.

Speaking at a meeting of PASOK’s national council in Thessaloniki, Papandreou said that he would change two of the articles governing the party’s financial regulations with the aim of making its transactions more transparent.

The move comes in the wake of the Siemens bribery scandal, in which a former PASOK official has admitted to accepting more than 400,000 euros from the Greek branch of the German company.

Papandreou used yesterday’s address to emphasize his belief that the government is not doing enough to tackle corruption, citing the fact that it has refused his request to set up a parliamentary investigative committee to look into the Siemens affair.
