A 46-year-old Greek and a 31-year-old foreign national were charged yesterday with the murder of a man at the port of Piraeus who was found with a shard of glass from a beer bottle lodged in his throat in the early hours. The body of the victim, whose identity was not revealed, was found close to the Aghios Nikolaos Church. According to police, the attack on the victim followed a verbal dispute with the 46-year-old suspect. The two alleged perpetrators faced a prosecutor.

Firemen yesterday rescued four people from a truck that had become trapped in floodwaters on a country road near Trikala, central Greece. The truck was found half-submerged in water after heavy rain caused a river to break its banks and flood the local road network. The four people were rescued safely after hours of efforts by rescue workers. Heavy rain caused traffic disruptions in Attica too, while strong winds kept some ferries moored.

The president of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) yesterday appealed to his country’s parliament to accelerate efforts to settle a dispute with Greece over the Balkan country’s name. “We should try to solve, not to delay, the dispute with Greece,” said Branko Crvenkovski. Again, it was not clear what amount the lone robber stole.

Two Greek air force fighter jets engaged in a mock dogfight with two Turkish planes over the small Dodecanese island of Farmakonisi, the Defense Ministry revealed yesterday. The two Turkish planes were among eight fighters that entered Greek air space.

Rescue workers yesterday recovered the charred remains of a 92-year-old man from his home in Thesprotia, northern Greece, which was almost completely destroyed by a fire. It appears that the blaze started in an adjacent storeroom before spreading to the house.

Police at Thessaloniki’s international airport yesterday detained 15 illegal immigrants and an Iraqi national believed to have arranged their transfer from Athens to the northern city where they had been due to board flights to Germany. The migrants were all from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The roof of an abandoned building in the trendy central Athens district of Psyrri collapsed yesterday evening but initial reports suggested that nobody was injured. The building was on the corner of Aghion Asomaton and Psaromiligou streets.
