Most of the milk on sale in the domestic market is the product of cows that have not been fed genetically modified (GM) fodder, the environmental group Greenpeace revealed yesterday during the presentation of its annual consumer guide.

A survey of the country’s dairy producers - which obliged the firms to provide certification and laboratory test results - revealed that 69 percent of Greek milk is GM-free, Greenpeace officials said, giving Greece a rare pat on the back.

“Today the Greek market has delivered a strong blow against GM products,” Greenpeace spokesperson Myrto Pispini said. “This gives us greater strength to continue our mission to clean up the entire food chain,” she said. Soya is believed to be the toughest challenge, as more than half (55 percent) of imports are genetically modified, according to Development Ministry figures.

A recent Eurobarometer poll shows Greeks to be the most concerned Europeans regarding GM products, with 81 percent expressing reservations.
