One of central Athens’s busiest road junctions known as the Devil’s Triangle — because of bottlenecks and despite a radical overhaul a decade ago — looks likely to keep its old name over the next few days until motorists get to grips with new traffic regulations that come into effect from midnight tonight.

With the new traffic arrangements in Ambelokipi, where Vassilissis Sofias, Kifissias, Mesogeion and Alexandras avenues converge, Public Works Ministry officials hope to reduce bottlenecks by up to 30 percent. The new system was deemed necessary after the government scrapped plans to build an underpass in the area.

From early tomorrow, traffic on Mesogeion will be one-way between Vassilisis Sofias and Pheidippidou, and on Pheidippidou between Mesogeion and Kifissias. Drivers coming from Alexandras will turn right into Zacharoff Street, then left to access Mesogeion. The bus lane in the center of Mesogeion will be removed and a new one established in the right-hand lane. There will be no left turns from Kifissias into Pheidippidou, or from Vassilisis Sofias into Alexandras.
