Coast guard in drug cleanup

Drug squad officers from the country’s central coast guard have confiscated hundreds of kilos of drugs over the past months by boosting their cooperation with local port authorities, it was revealed yesterday.

In the three-month period between April and June, coast guard teams carried out 67 raids across the country, seizing a ton of hashish, 11 kilos of heroin, 2 kilos of cocaine and large quantities of amphetamines and ecstasy. As a result, 81 people were indicted to appear before a prosecutor.

"Using a well-organized strategy and modern equipment, the unit is active across the country and sees positive results every day,” a senior coast guard officer told Kathimerini.

Following a tip-off that a large delivery of drugs was due from Albania to Corfu, officers ambushed a speedboat off the island last Friday, seizing 550 kilos of hashish. And last month, raids on Myconos led to the arrest of eight people on drug charges.
