A demonstrator confronts...

ORESTIS PANAGIOTOU/ANA

A demonstrator confronts riot police in central Athens yesterday as about 1,500 striking schoolteachers marched toward Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis’s official residence. The schoolteachers and other educators gathered, despite pouring rain, to demand higher pay. Police responded by firing tear gas on the demonstrators who attacked authorities with sticks and bottles. Two people were arrested.
