Reality TV shows face blanket ban

The future of reality TV was uncertain yesterday after the head of the National Radio and Television Council (ESP) suspended the broadcasting of the popular “Bar” and “Big Brother 2” shows, deeming their content indecent.

If the decision by watchdog chief Vassilis Lambridis is approved by the ESP’s 11-member council, which meets today, Greece will be the first EU country to take such harsh action against the recent trend of voyeuristic programming. Government spokesman Christos Protopappas played it safe yesterday, saying it would be inappropriate for him to comment before the vote.

Mega and Antenna channels decided to comply with the decision and will not broadcast. Mega, which shows “Bar” noted that Lambridis’s stance did not correspond to the council’s supposedly anti-censorship stance.
