A 10-month-old baby laughs...

THANASSIS STAVRAKIS/AP

A 10-month-old baby, Karen, laughs at the British air force in Akrotiri, Cyprus, yesterday. Some 1,300 evacuees from Lebanon arrived at the base and are waiting to be flown to Britain. Some 40,000 refugees from Lebanon are estimated to have arrived on the island as Cyprus has asked for help in easing the pressure on its resources. Turkey yesterday offered to act as a second transit point.
