City celebrates Smurfs’ 50th birthday

HASILAOS VAIOS/EUROKINISSI

A child writes on a display that formed part of exhibition set up in Klafthmonos Square, central Athens, to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Smurfs cartoon. The tiny blue characters were created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo. ‘Les Schtroumpfs,’ as they are known in Belgian, made their debut appearance on October 23, 1958, and in the 1980s Hanna-Barbera used them in an animated TV series. The exhibition began on Friday and ended yesterday.
