Rescuers on hand to save girl after fall

A 9-year-old girl was recovering in a hospital in Thessaloniki last night after she fell 15 meters into a marble quarry but was then fortunate to be rescued almost immediately by a team of emergency workers who happened to be practicing nearby.

The unnamed girl had been playing with some friends next to the quarry in the area of Retzikio, northern Greece. She slipped and fell, injuring her head and chest in the process. The child’s friends ran to get help and came across members of the Greek Rescue Team (EOD), who were conducting a rescue exercise near the quarry.

Members of the team climbed down into the quarry and safely lifted the girl out so an ambulance could take her to the hospital. Doctors at the Gennimata Hospital in Thessaloniki said the 9-year-old was not in any danger.
