An Olympic Airlines flight from the island of Lesvos was forced to make an emergency landing yesterday after a flock of seagulls flew into one of the airplane’s engines. The Boeing 737 took off from Lesvos at about 7 a.m. but the pilot was forced to return to the island soon afterward when he lost power in the engine the birds flew into. None of the 113 passengers was injured during the landing.

A prisoner who had escaped from his cell at the Kallipolis police station in Piraeus on Saturday night was recaptured a few hours later, officers said yesterday. The 30-year-old broke out of his holding cell on Saturday night but was caught on Irinis Avenue in Piraeus early on Sunday morning. Police did not give further information about the detainee.

Police in Serres, northern Greece, have arrested five men, aged between 19 and 38, on suspicion of copying people’s cash cards and using the forgeries to withdraw money. The gang allegedly placed an electronic scanning device and a tiny camera at an ATM in the city that enabled them to copy the numbers and PIN codes of cash cards used at the machine. All five suspects are foreigners, police said, but did not give more details.
