A second charge for Aussie con

Police in Australia yesterday lodged a second set of murder charges against the country’s most wanted fugitive, Tony Mokbel, who is in Greece’s Korydallos Prison.

Mokbel, who was arrested on June 5 in the Athens suburb of Glyfada after collaboration between Greek and Australian police, was charged with the murder of Michael Marshall in 2003 as part of a protracted turf war over drugs in Melbourne. Mokbel, known as “Fat Tony,” has already been charged with the murder of rival underworld mobster Lewis Moran in 2004. He has also been sentenced in absentia to 12 years in jail for drug offenses.

Meanwhile, Mokbel’s trial in Athens – on charges of using forged documents – was postponed for a second time yesterday as the court said it needed additional forensic evidence. The new trial date is July 13, Mokbel’s lawyer Yiannis Vlachos said.

Vlachos said Greek authorities had not yet received an extradition request for Mokbel despite Australian assurances that the procedure had been launched more than two weeks ago. Mokbel has reportedly appealed for asylum in Greece.
