Smoldering rubbish...

GIORGOS FOTIADIS/ANA

A plane drops water on smoldering rubbish at the Tagarades landfill in Thessaloniki yesterday. Local authorities said the fire, which burned for more than a week at the dump, had been put out and the water was being used to reduce the amount of smoke rising from the garbage. They ruled out shutting down the site completely. Deputy Interior Minister Thanassis Nakos pledged 150,000 euros to help the area recover from the fire, which led to high levels of toxic gases being released into the air.
