Yet another bus caught fire in Athens on Saturday, just a few weeks after the city’s public bus company (ETHEL) pledged to withdraw defective vehicles and Transport Minister Costis Hatzidakis blamed human error for the blazes.

The bus, the 11th to go up in flames since 2000, caught fire while traveling along Kavalas Avenue, west of the city center, on Saturday. Nobody on board the vehicle was injured.

ETHEL said last month, after a similar incident, that it had begun conducting tests on its entire fleet of more than 2,000 buses and would remove any suspect vehicles from circulation.

Hatzidakis has blamed poor maintenance for the problems. Some technicians have been suspended pending investigations into their work.
