Athens more pricey than top world cities

Athens is the 25th most expensive city in the world, ranking alongside Amsterdam and Sao Paolo, according to the results of a survey of 143 cities assessed by international human resources consulting firm Mercer.

Greece rose to 25th place from 29th last year, according to the survey, which found Moscow to be the world’s most expensive city, followed by Tokyo and London.

Athens ranks just three places below New York and is overall more expensive than major cities, including Madrid, Stockholm, Melbourne and Brussels.

The authors of the report considered rent prices as well as the costs of basic goods and services, such as public transport, in drawing up their chart.

According to the report, Athens sells some of Europe’s most expensive coffee, at an average of 3.85 euros a cup, just behind Moscow with 4 euros.
