Farmers gather in Halkiades...

VASILIKI PASHALI/ANA

Two priests look on as farmers gather in Halkiades, near Larissa in central Greece. The farmers were protesting over low incomes and the government’s refusal to buy up their excess cotton. In Trikala, some 50 kilometers away, representatives of farming unions called on the government to increase subsidies for cotton, wheat and corn during another public protest in the town’s central square. The unionists also called on the ruling conservatives to protect domestic production from imports and to help boost exports of Greek agricultural products through trade agreements.
