Security guards held for massive ATM theft

Two security guards in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, were arrested for embezzling 880,000 euros in cash that was headed to ATM machines, police said Saturday.

The two men, who were not identified, allegedly took the money in the last five months from five different banks.

On Friday they were caught by authorities after picking up 35,000 euros on behalf of the security company they worked for.

Rather than depositing the money, they placed it in one of the ATM machines from which they had stolen money a few days earlier, police said.

Investigators also discovered that the two suspects were printing counterfeit notes of different denominations to replace the money they stole.
