Warning to drivers from ambulance unit
The heavy rain forecast for the next few days means drivers will have to exercise especial caution, the ambulance service (EKAB) accident prevention unit warned yesterday, hoping to avert a repeat of the results of flash floods a few weeks ago that trapped vehicles, swept others away and flooded low-lying areas. Included in the advice is a warning to avoid driving to or through flooded areas and, when driving in heavy rain, to avoid transporting children, the elderly or the disabled. EKAB recommends using headlights in heavy rain, and fog lights where necessary. Both windshields should be clean and wipers in good working condition. Keep a safe distance from the car in front and avoid driving through flooded roads even in an off-road vehicle. While driving when there is water on the road, keep the windows closed, go slowly and turn on the hazard lights to warn other drivers.
