The Herod Atticus Theater...

Katerina Mavrona/ANA-MPA

The Herod Atticus Theater is to be closed in August for maintenance work, Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis said yesterday following a tour of the site. ‘There are concerns about the use of the theater because of the damage it has sustained over the years due to excessive use,’ Voulgarakis told reporters. Closing the 2nd century AD theater for a month should be sufficient for required repairs to be carried out, he said. Experts have said that some of the high arches surrounding the 5,000-seat theater are in need of immediate repair as they could pose a danger to spectators. The theater is a focus of the Athens arts scene in summer.
