Monday

President Costis Stephanopoulos visits Thessaloniki. He will unveil a memorial to the 513 Greek Jews who died fighting Italian and German forces in 1940-41. Later, he will inaugurate the newly refurbished Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce and Industry building.

School parades will be held across Greece commemorating Oct. 28, 1940, when Greece entered World War II on the side of the Allies.

State hospital doctors in Athens begin a three-day strike demanding higher salaries and more staff. Employees at the National First Aid Center (EKAB) begin rolling 24-hour strikes until November 15, demanding more pay and that their profession be classified as dangerous.

University professors are in the seventh week of a strike for more money.

The WINPEACE organization holds an open dialogue, “From Imia to a Culture of Peace,” at 11 a.m. at the GSEE building, 69 Patission St. Margarita Papandreou is the coordinator for Greece and Zeynep Oral for Turkey.

New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis to speak at a conference organized by the Macedonia University in Thessaloniki.

Defense Minister Yiannos Papantoniou inaugurates the military academy in Thessaloniki.

Agriculture Minister Giorgos Drys visits Cyprus.

Tuesday

National holiday, commemorating the day in 1940 when Greece rejected an Italian ultimatum and joined World War II. A military parade will be held in Thessaloniki. President Stephanopoulos and Archbishop Christodoulos will be present.

Wednesday

Airport Council International holds the fifth ACI Europe Ground Handling Conference and Exhibition on “New Legislation, New Market Forces: Permanent Revolution” at the Divani Apollon Palace, Athens. The conference is sponsored by Athens International Airport. For further information, www.aci-europe.org. To Friday.

Constantine Karamanlis Institute for Democracy organizes a conference on “Voting Trends in View of the Upcoming National Elections.” At the Divani Caravel Hotel.

The Skaramangas Shipyards launch the gunboat Krateos. Prime Minister Simitis’s wife, Daphne, will christen the ship.

Thursday

International tourism exhibition “Philoxenia 2003” opens at the Helexpo fairgrounds in Thessaloniki. Through Sunday.

Friday

National federation of university professors (POSDEP) meets to decide whether to continue strike action.
