Hundreds of residents of Neapoli, on the southern coast of Laconia, and the neighboring island of Elafonisos were joined by Laconia’s prefect Costas Fourkas and deputies from New Democracy, PASOK and the Communist Party yesterday at a demonstration near the site of a proposed 450 MW power plant in their area, which is protected under the Natura 2000 network. ND deputy Grigoris Apostolakos said that planning such a project in a protected area was ‘not legal,’ and the term ‘protected status’ would have no meaning if such projects were allowed within its boundaries.
