A senior official of the Culture Ministry holds aloft, at a press conference yesterday, a fragment of a Roman statue that was returned from Germany after being stolen from the Amphiaraeion sanctuary in northeastern Attica in 1991. The 40-centimeter-high piece, initially part of a colossal statue of a cuirass-clad senior Roman official, is decorated with the figures of Heracles fighting the Lion of Nemea (r) and Nereus with Aphrodite or a Nereid (l). It dates to the reign of Augustus (27 BC - AD 14).
