The European Commission has approved a Greek plan which aims to better coordinate police forces in Southeast Europe to combat trafficking for sexual exploitation, the head of the Greek Police (ELAS), Anastassios Dimoschakis, said on Saturday.

The plan proposes a two-pronged process to tackle trafficking in the area. It suggests coordination of actions in the countries involved to stop traffickers but also calls for similar harmonization in the way that the victims of trafficking are dealt with.

Earlier this month Greece submitted the plan — code-named “Ilaeira” — to Vice President of the European Commission Franco Frattini, who is also in charge of justice and internal security issues.

Dimoschakis said ELAS will organize a Balkan-wide exercise under real conditions to test the plan.
