Thousands of fuel trucks that travel on the country’s roads every year are dangerous and could cause a repeat of Monday’s fatal accident due to the lack of enforcement of vehicle safety standards, the Technical Chamber of Commerce (TEE) said yesterday.

A fuel truck slammed into a bus on Crete on Monday, creating an explosion that killed four people and seriously injured another four.

TEE said that the poor standards in force in neighboring countries, such as Turkey and Albania, make local roads more dangerous as these trucks often cross into Greece.

TEE member and university professor Vassilis Psarianos said that under EU guidelines, Greece is obligated to have areas set aside on highways where officials can inspect trucks. Monday’s accident is a reminder of the work that hasn’t been done, he said.
