Little hope for boy, 4, after abuse

A 4-year-old boy was in critical condition yesterday after allegedly being viciously beaten and abused by his mother’s partner at their home in the Athenian suburb of Aspropyrgos.

Late on Tuesday, the boy’s mother, a 24-year-old ethnic Greek from Kazakhstan, and her partner, a 25-year-old ethnic Greek from Russia, brought the boy to Elefsina’s Thriassio Hospital where doctors determined that the child had sustained serious head injuries and had bruises, bite marks and old cigarette burns all over his body.

The boy was subsequently transferred to the Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital’s intensive-care unit, where doctors said he had only a 1 percent chance of recovery.

According to police, the mother’s partner originally claimed that the boy had fallen out of the apartment window before allegedly admitting to having beaten him for misbehaving.

Both the boy’s mother and her partner are allegedly drug users, according to police, who said that the boy’s father died from drug abuse three years earlier. The mother and her partner were questioned by a prosecutor yesterday.
