The search for a new Supreme Court president will begin today as Greece’s top judge Romylos Kedikoglou retires along with another 11 members of the court.

Kedikoglou was appointed in July 2005 when the government was making efforts to overhaul Greece’s senior judiciary, whose credibility had been hit by allegations of corruption. However, the Supreme Court president has been dogged by similar allegations in the weeks leading up to his retirement. The ruling conservatives have criticized PASOK for fomenting the claims.

Justice Minister Anastassis Papaligouras will propose several candidates to the Cabinet so a decision can be reached as to who will succeed Kedikoglou. His successor is expected to be named sometime early in July.

The Cabinet will also decide on another six Supreme Court appointments, including five vice presidents.
