Summer roadworks to frustrate travelers

The company responsible for taking care of the highway north of Attica has told drivers to expect delays throughout the summer after another frustrating weekend for those who attempted to escape Athens.

There were more tailbacks this weekend and according to one of the officials at the Nea Odos consortium, which is also responsible for constructing the Ionia Odos in western Greece and which operates the toll posts north of Athens, drivers can expect more of the same in the weeks to come due to roadworks.

“People are right to complain but they should be patient and factor in the extra time needed because of the traffic,” said Sergios Lambropoulos, who added that work is under way at five different points. “Roads must be surfaced during the summer and we would be carrying out work at more points if the traffic police allowed it.”
