Two baby Siamese twins from Greece, successfully separated earlier this month by surgeons in Rome, returned to their native Thessaloniki yesterday afternoon after being discharged from the hospital.

The 4-month-old girls were born on June 13 in Thessaloniki joined at the temple, but had separate brains. A team of over 30 doctors and nurses took part in the October 11 operation at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, after which the twins were pronounced in fine health.

A hospital statement yesterday confirmed the girls remained in an «extremely satisfying» state, but added that further surgery will be required after two or three months to help reconstruct missing skull parts.

«We expect normal mental and physical development for the two girls,» said Dr Concezio Di Rocco, who led the surgical team.
