Marathon to disrupt traffic on Sunday

A series of traffic regulations are to be implemented on Sunday, from 6.30 a.m. until 2.30 p.m. when the 21st Classic Athens Marathon — an Olympic test event — gets under way.

The marathon route starts at the official starting line at Marathon, runs along Marathonos Avenue, circles the Burial Mound of the Athenians, rejoins Marathonos Avenue, continues along Mesogeion Avenue, Vassilissis Sofias and Vas. Constantinou, and terminates at the Panathanaic Stadium.

To ensure the athletes’ safety and the smooth running of the marathon, traffic will be disrupted along this route, and specifically on the following roads:

– Marathonos Avenue:

Between the official starting line at Marathon and Kato Souliou Avenue from 6.30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Between Kato Souliou Avenue and the junction with Dionysou Avenue (toward Aghios Petros) from 8 a.m. to 9.30 a.m.

Between the junction at Dionysou Avenue and the junction with Vlepyrou Street (toward Pikermi) from 8 a.m. to 11.45 a.m.

Between Vlepyrou Street and Lavriou/

Kleisthenous (Stavros, Aghia Paraskevi) from 9.10 a.m. until 1.10 p.m.

– Mesogeion Avenue:

Between Lavriou/Kleisthenous and Halandriou Avenue from 9.40 a.m. until 1.30 p.m. (only Athens-bound lane).

Between Halandriou Avenue and Fokidos/Feidippidou from 8.45 a.m. to 2.10 p.m. (only Athens-bound lane).

– Central Athens:

Between Fokidos/Feidippidou and the Panathenaic Stadium from 9 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

– Vas. Olgas and Ardittou from 9 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

– Parking will be forbidden along the entire marathon route (in both lanes) from midnight on Sunday until the end of the race at 2.30 p.m. — that is, along Marathonos Avenue, the road leading toward the Burial Mound of the Athenians, Mesogeion Avenue, Vas. Sofias and Vas. Constantinou. Parking, and stopping, will also be forbidden on Dimocratias Avenue, Panos Street at Marathon, Archimidous Street (from Eratosthenous to Kleitomachou) next to the Panathanaic Stadium, and on Ardittou Street and Vas. Olgas Avenue.
