Ostriches at Attica Zoo in Spata...

YANNIS BEHRAKIS/REUTERS

Ostriches at Attica Zoo in Spata, near Athens International Airport, look bemused as they watch visitors go by on Friday, which was a particularly busy day for the zoo due to the October 28 national holiday. A Baringo giraffe, seemingly unperturbed, walks by in the background. Ostriches are one of 304 bird species that can be found at the zoo, which covers some 32 acres on the city’s eastern outskirts. Despite its distance from the city center, Attica Zoo has proved an increasingly popular attraction for families. It received 211,000 visitors last year, according to official figures.
