Olympiakos victorious in Greek water polo

Olympiakos won the Greek Cup in water polo yesterday as it dismissed Panionios 9-6 in the final at Ptolemaida. This 12th cup in the club’s history sets the Reds on course for one more domestic double, while a treble is also possible given that Olympiakos is close to reaching the semifinals of the Euroleague. In the semifinals on Saturday Olympiakos had beaten Panathinaikos 8-4 while Panionios had seen off PAOK 11-8, in front of up to 1,200 PAOK fans in the northern city.

Easy win for nationals over Bulgaria in rugby

The Greek national rugby team scored an impressive six tries to thrash visiting Bulgaria 41-18 on Saturday and rekindle its hopes of winning promotion from its FIRA Group C group. In front of over 2,000 spectators in the northeastern city of Alexandroupolis, Greece took a commanding lead in the first half (26-6) and never looked back, to clinch its second win in three games.

Volleyball playoffs

EA Patras is the fourth team to reach the semifinals of the volleyball league, after beating visiting Finikas Syrou 3-2 on Friday. It will travel to Olympiakos tonight for the first match of the best-of-three semifinal series in Piraeus. In the other semifinal, Panathinaikos will be hosting champions Iraklis. In the relegation playouts, Milon scored a vital 3-1 win over Kifissia at home on Saturday.

Women’s hoops

Athinaikos completed its perfect season in women’s basketball scoring its 26th win in as many games, as it defeated Panathinaikos 78-68 away from home. This was the first league title for the Vyronas club. Esperides Kallitheas had won the Greek Cup.

Ice hockey

The national ice hockey team scored two wins in two games in the World Championships Division III in New Zealand. It beat Ireland 7-3 and was awarded the win over Mongolia by default on Saturday, as its opponents never got to play due to visa problems. Today Greece faces New Zealand.

Weightlifting

Nikos Kourtidis won three medals for Greece in the European Weightlifting Championship on Friday, as he earned two silver medals and one bronze in the 94-kilogram category in Bucharest.
