Xenakis, Blauel double wins

Christos Theologou

Athina Dilaveri leaps for the ball during the final of the Masters Tournament in Keramoti.

Felix Blauel and Manos Xenakis doubled their wins in the Greek Masters Series in beach volleyball yesterday, as they won the season’s second tournament in Keramoti, eastern Macedonia.

The Austrian and the Greek defeated Ilias Zolastathiadis and Thodoris Papadimitriou in the final with a 2-1 score (21-9, 19-21, 15-12). Blauel played while suffering from back pain but Xenakis played an excellent game, which the Austrian also recognized in the statement he made at the end of the final in dedicating the win exclusively to his partner.

In the semifinal, Xenakis and Blauel had beaten Thanos Maroulis and Fernandos Billiris, also in three sets (21-17, 15-21, 15-6). A week earlier, they had also triumphed in the tournament in Naxos.

Ecstatic Kiss

In the women’s tournament, the winners were Athina Dilaveri and Katalin Kiss. In the final, they beat Elina Papadopoulou and Ioanna Kouloumenta in straight sets (21-14, 21-18).

Hungarian star Kiss, who had just won her first beach volleyball tournament, said: “You cannot imagine how happy I am. I hope we continue to do well in Crete, which is where Athina is from.” The next Masters tournament is on July 9-11 at Aghia Galini in Crete.

Kiss played indoor volleyball last season with Panionios but this summer she may transfer to league runner-up Olympiakos.
