Basinas mulling an end to Greece career

ACTION IMAGES

Set to go? Angelos Basinas will report-edly announce his decision next month.

Greece skipper Angelos Basinas is reportedly considering ending his career with the national soccer team.

Reports in the Greek media suggested yesterday that the defensive midfielder at AEK has chosen to retire from coach Otto Rehhagel’s team at the end of the year, and will announce his decision after the matches against Moldova and Switzerland in Piraeus next month.

The 32-year-old wants to concentrate on his club soccer with AEK in order to return to his previous standards of play, local media has reported. Last month, he signed a three-year contract with the Athens club.

Basinas was said to be surprised at not being selected for the starting lineup in the match between Latvia and Greece in Riga last week. Sources say he even told general manager Takis Fyssas that he is quitting the national team with immediate effect. Fyssas and some other Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) officials managed to change the player’s mind that night, and Basinas was introduced as a second-half substitute. His game was poor, however, and he even had a tiff with Traianos Dellas during the game, which showed how much he had been affected.

It seems the matter has remained on Basinas’s mind. HFF sources have said this week that the likelihood of the player quitting Greece is not related to what happened in Latvia, but confirmed that Basinas will decide next month.
