Migrants abandoned in truck

Police found 45 illegal immigrants in an abandoned truck in Nea Philadelphia, northern Athens, on New Years Eve.

The migrants, 42 of whom were from Afghanistan, had paid traffickers 1,000 to 1,500 euros to be smuggled into Italy. They were told they would be taken to the port of Igoumenitsa, where they would be smuggled onto a ferry to Italy.

It was not clear what led to the immigrants being abandoned in the truck.

Police said they were looking for six foreigners believed to be members of the smuggling ring to which the migrants paid money.
