Apostolaki resigns as PASOK MP, majority down to two
PASOK MP Milena Apostolaki has resigned from the ruling party’s parliamentary group, reducing Prime Minister George Papandreou’s majority in Parliament to just two seats.
In her letter to Papandreou, Apostolaki said that she disagreed with Papandreou’s decision to propose a referendum on whether Greece should accept the debt and loan agreement it agreed with its eurozone partners and banks last week.
Apostolaki said that she would continue as an independent. The prime minister has called a vote of confidence in Parliament on Friday.
PASOK deputy Vasso Papandreou warned that «bankruptcy is imminent» and called on President Karolos Papoulias to form a national unity government that would serve for a fixed period of time before elections are held.
Six members of PASOK’s national council have called for Papandreou’s resignation.
