KEELPNO warns of health risk of burning wood indoors
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) on Wednesday added its voice to those warning of the health risks of the increased use of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves by Greeks anxious to cut down on their heating bills, warning that burning wood in the home released 30 times more air pollution than using a well-maintained heating oil or gas-burning boiler.
According to KEELPNO, atmospheric pollution measurements across Attica show a significant increase in PM-10 air pollution particles.
The center warned that such an increase in air pollution can lead to respiratory problems as well as aggravating allergies and disturbing the neurological and reproductive systems.
